FROM ARGENTINA
How can I calculate the volume of my move?
The volume of your move is calculated by multiplying the width × length × height of each individual item and then adding them all together.
However, for a quick personal estimate, please note that both a standard one-door refrigerator and 10 medium boxes (0.40 × 0.60 × 0.40) take up approximately 1 m³.
Also, when you request your ONLINE QUOTE you will be able to use an automated table that will help your calculate an estimated volume.
Please note that, for quotation purposes, the gross volume is considered, which consists of the household goods (net volume) plus packing.
How is the cost of my move calculated?
We calculate the cost of your move based on only volume for sea shipments, and on weight and volume for air shipments (How can I calculate the volume of my move?). Based on this, the cost of the following services is taken into account:
- Packing of household goods and furniture at the origin residence.
- Disassembly of furniture.
- Preparation of the packing list.
- Loading of household goods.
- Transportation to our warehouse.
- Transportation to the bonded warehouse.
- Storage of the shipment until the departure date.
- Processing of the required procedures at both origin and destination.
- Freight by sea / air / land.
- Customs clearance at both origin and destination.
- Transportation from the terminal or bonded warehouse to the final residence.
- Unloading of household goods.
- Unpacking and removal of leftover packing materials.
- Assembly of furniture.
- Return of the container, if applicable.
- Insurance.
A move includes certain fixed costs (such as some port charges, customs clearance, transportation, etc.) and other variable costs such as sea freight, packing materials, required labor, bonded warehouse charges, some port fees, among others. It is important to note that for larger volumes, fixed costs are spread out, making a larger move proportionally more cost-effective than a smaller one.
In an international move, the destination port costs can be approximately estimated. These will be provided by our overseas correspondents.
In the case of an air move, 1 m³ (35.3 cubic feet) is equivalent to 167 kg (368 lb), and billing is calculated according to this rule. By way of example, if you have half a cubic meter (0.5 m³ / 17.7 cubic feet) and the weight equals or exceeds 167 kg (368 lb), the chargeable amount is based on weight; if you have one cubic meter (35.3 cubic feet) but the weight does not reach 167 kg (368 lb), the chargeable amount is 167 kg (368 lb).
In any case, the easiest way to calculate the cost of your move and understand what is included and what is not, is by requesting an ONLINE quote from us.
Am I exempt from taxes?
As long as the owner of the move falls within the current regulations for the import of unaccompanied baggage, no customs duties are payable (What are the requirements to carry out my move without paying customs duties?).
If the owner does not meet this requirement, there is the alternative of carrying out the move by paying customs duties.
What are the requirements to carry out my move?
To qualify for the unaccompanied baggage regime, you must meet the following requirements:
- Have a minimum of 1 year of residence in Argentina.
- Have not been outside Argentina for more than 60 days during the 365 days prior to the start date of the moving procedures.
- Hold citizenship or a permanent residence permit in the destination country.
If at least one of these requirements is not met, you may still carry out your move under the Export Technical Office, and each case will be reviewed individually.
How is the insurance arranged?
To arrange the insurance, you must sign the following forms:
The insurance amount is calculated based on the replacement value of the goods at destination. Recommendation: the declared value should be consistent with the actual value of the items.
How long does it take for my move to arrive?
There are three types of transport for carrying out a move: land, sea, and air (When should each type of transport be used?). Each one has a different process and, therefore, transit times also vary.
In the case of a sea shipment, considering customs timelines, the services provided both at origin and destination, sea freight, and the different transportation stages, it takes between two and three months, provided that all documentation is submitted correctly and on time and that there are no force majeure events. The transit time of a sea move also varies depending on the shipping mode, changing according to whether shared or exclusive containers are used (What types of containers exist?).
If your move is by air, taking the same criteria into account, the estimated timeframe is approximately 2 to 4 weeks.
Lastly, there are land relocations, which are usually used for moves to and from neighboring countries. These take between one month and one and a half months.
In which situations is each type of transport used?
The choice of transport depends on the volume of the move and the origin location.
For short-distance moves from neighboring countries, land, sea, or air transport is used.
If the destination is in Europe, North America, Asia, etc., and the volume is greater than approximately 4 m³ (141.3 cubic feet), it is generally shipped by sea transport. If the volume is lower than the one mentioned, depending on the costs at each origin, it may sometimes be more convenient to arrange an air shipment.
What types of containers exist?
In an international move carried out by sea, different types of containers can be chosen, depending on what is most convenient.
A 20-foot container has an approximate total capacity of 30 m³.
The intermediate option is the 40-foot container, which has a capacity of 60 m³.
Lastly, being slightly taller than the previous one, the 40-foot HC container is used, which has an approximate capacity of 70 m³.
In any case, there is the option of not filling an entire container and using only part of it. This is known as consolidated shipping or LCL (Less than Container Load), while using a container on an exclusive basis, whether it is fully loaded or not, is a shipping method known as FCL (Full Container Load).
Export of vehicles from Argentina
Can I ship personal belongings inside the vehicle?
No, when carrying out a move, vehicles and household goods require two different customs clearances, as the export regime is different. For this reason, they cannot be mixed.
In what condition should I deliver the vehicle for transport?
For the transport of a vehicle, it must be delivered to the company in a specific manner:
- The fuel tank must be almost empty.
- There must be no accessories or personal belongings inside the vehicle.
(Can I ship items inside the vehicle?) The battery must be disconnected, and it may contain only one spare tire.
Do I need to pay taxes to export my vehicle?
When exporting a used vehicle, taxes must be paid on its value, both for motorcycles and automobiles.

Import of vehicles to Argentina
What are the requirements to import my vehicle?
If you are an Argentine citizen returning to the country, or a foreign national with permanent residence in Argentina, in order to import a vehicle without paying customs duties, you must meet the following conditions:
- The owner must have lived abroad for more than two years and must be able to prove this with a certificate of residence issued by the Argentine consulate.
- The vehicle must be registered in the owner’s name for at least 3 months prior to the owner’s arrival in Argentina.
- The title must be certified at the Argentine consulate in the country where it is located.
If you are neither an Argentine citizen nor a permanent resident, your vehicle will enter the country under a temporary tourist admission: the vehicle is allowed to circulate for a period of 3 to 8 months. Once this period has ended, it must either be nationalized, the temporary admission extended, or repatriated.
Each person may import only one car and one motorcycle into the country. If two cars or two motorcycles are imported, they must be registered under the names of two different individuals.
Please note that the shipment of commercial vehicles under the household move regime is not permitted.

Do I need to pay taxes to import my vehicle?
To determine the value of the vehicle in the country of origin, Argentine Customs will refer to the main vehicle sales websites in the country of origin.
If the value of an automobile at origin is lower than USD 15,000 CIF or USD 13,500 FOB (What are CIF and FOB costs? How do they affect the import of my vehicle?), no taxes will be payable.
If these values are exceeded, taxes must be paid upon entry into the country.
Motorcycles always pay taxes upon entry into the country, regardless of their value.
What do CIF and FOB costs mean, and how do they impact the import of my vehicle?
The FOB cost, short for Free on Board, is simply the vehicle’s market value. To determine it, you must check the most commonly used vehicle sales websites in the country of origin of the move.
The CIF cost, short for Cost, Insurance, and Freight, is the sum of the vehicle’s market value, its insurance, and the cost of sea freight.
It is necessary for you to be aware of these values and their meaning, as they will be of utmost importance when determining whether your vehicle will be subject to taxes upon entry into the country.
